Grab Hire

Do I need a skip or a grab hire lorry?

The answer to which is better, skip hire or grab hire, usually comes down to what type of waste you have, how much of it you have and where it’s located on your site.

Grab hire is often more suitable for large amounts of waste that can be taken away in one swoop. Skip hire, on the other hand, means you can keep your site tidy over the period of a project, but can take less waste and will sit on your site.

If you need help deciding on the right option to dispose of your waste, just call and speak to our friendly team.

How much does it cost to hire a grab lorry?

The price for our grab hire service is dependent on several factors, including your location, the lorry size you require, how many loads you need and what type of waste it is you’re disposing of. Call our friendly team today to receive a more accurate quote for grab hire in Arundel, Littlehampton, Bognor Regis and the surrounding areas.

What is grab hire?

Grab hire is a specific service that utilises a grab truck. This truck, a HGV (heavy goods vehicle), is specifically designed with a hydraulic grab arm so that large quantities of heavy waste can be easily lifted and placed in the open bed of the lorry.

We hire our grab lorries so that you can clear a construction site or industrial waste without spending lots of time and money on labour. Thanks to the manoeuvrable arm, it is especially handy for removing waste from hard-to-access areas of a site.

Contact us today for more information on our grab hire service.

What type of waste can a grab hire lorry take?

Useful for construction, demolition and landscaping, there are plenty of waste types that you can move with our grab hire, making it easy to dispose of lots of heavy waste all at once. Our grab hire lorries can be used to remove the following:

  • Earth/soil
  • Hardcore and rubble
  • Tree and garden waste
  • Hedge trimmings
  • Concrete and bricks

These are the most common items, but please contact us to check if you have a more specific waste product in mind that you’d like to dispose of.

Recycling

Do you have a waste management licence?

Yes, here at SCS Waste we hold both a waste management and waste carriers licence.

In order to operate as a licensed waste management and recycling company in the UK, you must be assigned a waste management licence number by the Environment Agency. To obtain this, you must prove that you have the required equipment, skills, infrastructure and proper processes in place to dispose of waste in a responsible and environmentally friendly way.

Here at SCS Waste, we hold all the necessary accreditations and licences, which you can view here.

How much waste gets recycled?

Here at SCS Waste, we’ve made it our mission to divert as much waste away from landfill as possible; that’s why we’ve invested over £1 million into creating a modern recycling and treatment centre where we can meticulously sort through your waste.

We are licensed to process 150,000 tonnes of mixed waste and we strive for 100% recovery of recyclable materials. When you partner with us, you’re not only ensuring the most efficient solution for your business, but you’ve also got peace of mind that you’re disposing of waste in the most environmentally friendly way possible.

What type of waste do you recycle?

Our state-of-the-art recycling centre has the capacity to tackle a variety of waste, including:

  • Cardboard
  • Glass
  • Paper
  • Timber

We can also dispose of any WEEE waste, such as household appliances and IT equipment, and make sure it is processed in line with all WEEE regulations. If you’ve got any sensitive documents that you need to destroy, we can help with that too, by providing confidential paper shredding along with a Certificate of Destruction for your peace of mind.

Skip Hire

Do I need a permit?

All skips, by law, require a road permit from the relevant local authority – excluding private roads. Our specialists can help you determine whether you require a road permit for your skip, as well as applying for the permit on your behalf – we do ask for permit payments to be paid in advance.

It will take Highways England up to five working days to approve your skip for the road. Once approved, the permit will last for fourteen days – an extension can be applied for, as long as three days’ notice is given before the end of the fourteen days.

Should the skip be placed in a parking bay, additional permission and payment may be required from the hirer.

Still unsure check out our skip permits for beginners blog article!

Do I need to put lights on my skip?

Skips that are to be placed on a public road are required by law to have lights or reflective markings so that drivers, pedestrians and other road users can clearly see them in the dark. Talk to our team when hiring your skip if you plan on having it placed on the road and we will work to ensure the correct solution is put in place.

Do I require a road permit to place my skip on the road or a grass verge?

All skips, by law, require a road permit – excluding private roads. Our specialists can help you determine whether you require a road permit for your skip, as well as applying for the permit on your behalf – we do ask for permit payments to be paid in advance.

It will take Highways England up to five working days to approve your skip for the road. Once approved, the permit will last for fourteen days – an extension can be applied for, as long as three days notice is given prior to the end of the fourteen day period.

Should the skip be placed in a parking bay, additional permission and payment may be required from the hirer.

How do I arrange for my skip to be collected?

Once your skip has been filled and you’re ready for us to take it away, just give our helpful team a call on 0808 169 7463 and we’ll then arrange for collection by our next available vehicle – it’s as simple as that!

How full can a skip be?

When you hire one of our skips, you can generally fill it up to the designated fill line. Your waste should not be spilling out of the sides of the skip. You might also want to check if there is a weight capacity for your chosen skip if you want to fill it with heavy items, as there may also be weight restrictions for our vehicles.

How long is the skip hire period?

Our skip hire periods last for 2 weeks, but if you finish before, simply call us and we will collect. Should you require the skip for longer than 2 weeks, please notify our team at the time of booking.

How quickly can you deliver?

Our delivery service normally runs as a next day service. With a little notice, we are also able to supply our clients on Saturdays, and customers can also book in advance.

What can I put in a skip?

You can swiftly and safely dispose of a wide range of materials via our skip hire service. This includes common materials such as bricks, card, plastic, paper, textiles, soil, PVC, glass, metal, tiles and non-hazardous wood. Read more about what we can and cannot take on our dedicated page.

What can’t I put into the skips?

Our skips are able to contain a wide variety of mixed waste items, however, we are unable to collect certain materials without prior arrangement or notice. These include: asbestos, gas cylinders, tyres, tree roots, batteries, mattresses, fridges, freezers, paints, liquids, and chemicals.

What skip size do I need?

The answer to this will largely depend on your project, but as a rule of thumb, homeowners will likely need anything between 2 to 8 yards to take waste from clearances and small DIY projects. For commercial and construction purposes, the larger 12-yard skip or RORO skips are recommended. See more details about our skip sizes here.

Where can I put a skip?

You can put a skip from us either on your own private land, such as your driveway or garden without the need for a permit. Alternatively, you may be able to have your skip placed on the road outside your property, but this will likely require a skip hire permit.
